Sustainability in Action at Six Senses Con Dao

Effective Sustainability Planning:

Six Senses Con Dao was designed with sustainability at its core. The resort utilizes reclaimed materials and natural ventilation techniques to minimize environmental impact while maintaining its harmonious integration into the pristine surroundings. Initiatives such as responsible energy utilization and water conservation systems further reflect the resort’s commitment to eco-conscious operations.

Environmental Stewardship:

Among its flagship initiatives, Six Senses Con Dao’s turtle conservation program offers guests the chance to engage with local marine conservation efforts. Guests can witness and participate in the ethical release of endangered green sea turtle hatchlings. Additionally, the resort’s Earth Lab serves as a hub for conservation education, innovative sustainability projects, and guest involvement.

Community Engagement and Social Responsibility:

Six Senses Con Dao’s commitment to the community is a cornerstone of its sustainability efforts. Through the “Water for All” initiative, the resort has provided safe drinking water to students, teachers, and staff at school, kindergartens and the Military Hospital in Con Dao. This critical initiative addresses the dual challenges of access to clean water and reducing plastic waste in the region.

The resort has also taken an active role in environmental preservation by organizing clean-up events with the local community and resort hosts. These efforts resulted in the removal of several tons of waste, predominantly plastic, from beaches and the shores of the national park, contributing to the conservation of Con Dao’s pristine landscapes.

Education remains a priority, Six Senses Con dao has dedicated facilities located at the resort’s Host Accommodation Building, where English lessons are regularly provided to local children. These classes help build confidence and language skills, fostering opportunities for future growth. The team also supported a local elementary school’s English-speaking contest, participating as guests and judges to encourage young learners.

Crystal Water Production:

In its ongoing commitment to reducing plastic waste, Six Senses Con Dao produced 24,289 in-house water bottles this quarter, equivalent to 14,065 liters of plastic-free hydration. Over the past year, the resort’s efforts prevented 85,488 single-use plastic bottles from entering its operations—a significant milestone in its journey toward a plastic-free future.

Cultural Heritage and Authentic Experiences:

Nestled in a destination rich in history, Six Senses Con Dao celebrates local culture by weaving it into every guest’s experience. Guests can engage in traditional Vietnamese crafts, explore historical sites, or participate in programs that showcase the unique heritage of the Con Dao archipelago. By incorporating local art, cuisine, and traditions, the resort fosters a deep connection between guests and its surroundings.

Plastic-Free Vision:

Aligned with Six Senses’ “Journey to Plastic Freedom,” the resort has achieved significant milestones in eliminating single-use plastics. Since its inception, Six Senses Con Dao adopted more innovative solutions to reduce plastic across all operations, setting a benchmark for sustainable hospitality.

Looking Ahead

Six Senses Con Dao remains committed to championing sustainability, wellness, and cultural preservation. By fostering innovation and collaboration, the resort continues to create meaningful experiences that leave a positive impact on the environment and local community. Guests are invited to join this journey and be part of the difference we make every day.

Miracle Of Nature: Blanche – The Baby White Sea Turtle Hatches at Six Senses Con Dao

CON DAO, Vietnam – October 20, 2023

In a remarkable turn of events, guests and hosts of Six Senses Con Dao on Friday witnessed a wondrous marine spectacle with the hatching of a very special arrival of an exceptionally rare white sea turtle at the resort’s in-house incubation center “Let’s Get Cracking” on the pristine beach of Six Senses Con Dao – where the natural environment is painstakingly preserved and respected.

Blanche is a Chelonia Mydas turtle, also known as green sea turtle, that was born with leucism, a genetic condition that leaves minimal melanin pigment in Blanche’s skin and shell (the pigment that determines the color of skin, hair and eyes in people and animals). While there are no exact figures for the rate of leucism in sea turtles, it is acknowledged that leucistic hatchlings are extremely rare, with some marine biologists estimating the rate to be one in many hundreds of thousands of sea turtle eggs that are laid.

Even at the best of times, sea turtle hatchlings face a multitude of challenges – once hatched, baby sea turtles must race across the beach to the ocean, avoiding crabs and birds, before continuing to outswim a myriad of fish and marine wildlife predators that consider baby turtles as dinner. Not to mention, one of the greatest risks for the global sea turtle population worldwide today is unfortunately the human threat, stemming from poaching, pollution, fishing activities as well as destruction of natural turtle habitats.

Blanche not only has to contend with this mountain of challenges, but also the difficulties arising from Blanche’s natural camouflage being removed by leucism, leaving Blanche white and extra visible to predators (particularly underwater). Leucistic hatchlings also generally suffer from various malformations, which in Blanche’s case includes limited sight.

As always, guests at Six Senses Con Dao can learn further about the unique characteristics of our turtle hatchlings (including Blanche) and the broader ecosystem they inhabit through guided tours of our incubation center and educational workshops.

A rare and stunning sea turtle, our hope is that Blanche will beat the odds to return to sea, and to live a long and happy life!

Six Senses Con Dao Announces Record Breaking Conservation Efforts On World Wildlife Day

CON DAO, Vietnam – March 3, 2023

World Wildlife Day is celebrated on March 3rd in honor of the adoption of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) in 1973. This year’s World Wildlife Day provided the ideal opportunity for Six Senses Con Dao to announce their record-breaking conservation achievements in 2022. A total of 6,929 baby Green Sea Turtles hatched successfully and were released safely into the warm waters of the Con Dao archipelago.

The conservation program, conducted in partnership with Con Dao National Park, is a key focus of Six Senses Con Dao. The “Let’s Get Cracking” incubation center, a unique program dedicated to the conservation of endangered green sea turtles, has successfully released 18,488 turtles since 2018. The number of turtles released in 2022 increased to 6,929, representing a significant progress from the previous year’s total of 3,351.

Similarly pleasing is the incredibly high success rate that the center is achieving. Over the past two years, around 90% of all eggs have successfully hatched and released. This is a remarkable increase from the success rates of between 60-70% achieved in the program’s early years, which are comparable to other programs around the world. The resort’s passionate team attributes this achievement to their continuous learning, improvement of egg positioning, sand quality, natural management of climate conditions, and the use of enhanced vegetation for shade and protection during incubation.

Six Senses Con Dao offers guests the opportunity to participate in the ethical hatchling release, providing a truly unique and unforgettable experience often described as life-changing.

Alongside the active conservation programs, Six Senses Con Dao employs a broad sustainability mission, touching many areas of our resort’s operations including but not limited to:

An extensive organic garden where over 30 types of fruits, vegetables, and herbs are grown. Organic food scraps are transformed into valuable compost which is given back to the garden in form of soil. Additionally, the resort treats its greywater on-site and repurposes it for irrigation purposes, helping to maintain the lush and beautiful grounds.

On-site, a reverse osmosis plant is used to produce mineral drinking water that is contained in reusable glass bottles, thus preventing the disposal of 10,000 plastic bottles each month in landfills.

Taken steps towards sustainability in its design and construction, the resort’s pathways, swimming pools, and back-of-house areas have been retiled using recycled glass from wine bottles. In 2021 alone, over 300 wine bottles were repurposed into long-lasting and beautiful Terrazzo flooring, effectively reducing glass waste.
